The Oculus is the University of Virginia’s multidisciplinary journal of undergraduate research and the Commonwealth’s premier undergraduate research publication.

It is a journal that is compiled, edited, and published by undergraduate students on an annual basis. Articles in The Oculus cover a limitless array of topics, from American History to Electronic Music to Biochemistry. Any undergraduate who has completed a significant research project may submit their work for a chance to be published.

From the Editor in Chief

As a research university, UVA makes intellectual inquiry available to its students through a variety of channels. From projects conducted through the Jefferson Public Citizens program to independent study in chemistry laboratories, there is a research opportunity for every student at our university.

The Oculus aims to recognize the very best of that research by publishing it for the world to see. Our unbiased name-blind selection process and our commitment to including a wide range of disciplines in our journal allow us to fairly represent a broad swath of the new knowledge being created at this incredible school.

No subject is too commonplace or too obscure for The Oculus. We have published everything from a social analysis of farmers markets to a study of civil unrest in China. We believe that free-flowing academic discourse is essential to maintaining an informed society, and I’ll be complicit in a cliché by closing with a Thomas Jefferson quote:

“I have sworn upon the altar of god, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”
